Charges for water service fund the purchase of water from the DuPage Water Commission and the maintenance of the Village's water infrastructure. In 2011, the City of Chicago announced that it would increase the amount it charges for water. It has planned a rate increase that will go into effect over the next four years. To lessen the impact on residents, the Village is spreading this increase over the next five years.
It is necessary for the Village to pass these water rate increases on to users so that the Village can continue to support current and future water operating and capital expenses, including its 29 miles of water mains. The Village continues to replace old and failing water mains, however more than 16 miles of the Village's water mains are 67 years old and older.
